The 25-year-old was born in the California coastal town of Santa Cruz and has rarely strayed far from surf and sand since. Indeed, throughout high school the freckled strawberry blonde was the epitome of the California girl, an all-around athlete who focused on two passions: volleyball and surfing. The latter drew her to Southern California in 2001; strolling on a Santa Barbara beach that year, she caught the eye of famed fashion photographer Mario Testino, who took some pictures and told Miller to think about a modeling career. Unsure about the path she should pursue, she consulted her mother, who put the choice into perspective: “You can always go back to school, but you can’t always model.” An appearance in Perfect 10magazine was noticed by the crew at Sports Illustrated, who quickly hired Miller to appear in the 2001 swimsuit issue; she has since become an SI mainstay, also gracing the 2003 and 2004 issues. Other clients besotted with Miller’s all- American appeal include Victoria’s Secret, J. Crew and Tommy Hilfiger. Even as her star continues to rise, Miller says her mother’s advice remains much on her mind. Still residing in a California coastal town, she ultimately plans to return to school—and what will the girl who loves basketball, football and NASCAR love to study?
